How Effective Is It To Use Coconut Oil For Weight Loss?

The first thing you need to understand is that the rate at which you burn fat will depend on your metabolic rate (metabolism). This is how your body utilizes the energy, which you get from the foods you eat.

Metabolic rate will also vary from person to person. A person with a very fast metabolism will burn fat much faster than a person with a slower metabolism.

This is why you always have that one friend that can eat anything and never gain weight. They have a very fast metabolism and they practically just burn off everything they eat.

On the other hand, some people just seem to act as a storage for fat. Even if they eat small amounts of food, they still gain weight very quickly, and often time it is very difficult to lose.

That is because they have a very slow metabolism.

The good thing though is that there are some foods that can dramatically boost your metabolism so that you can burn fat faster.

Coconut oil is one such super-food that can speed up your metabolism.

Let’s look at the various ways coconut oil can help you to burn fat, lose weight and achieve your fitness goals:

Slash Blood Sugar

1. Coconut Oil Will Boost Your Metabolism

Boosting Your Metabolism

Coconut oil for weight loss is very different from the other fats that you consume in your diet. Other oils contain long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) but coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA).

But What Are Fatty Acids?

Fatty acids are the units that are combined together to form fats. In other words, fatty acids are the building blocks of fats both in our bodies and in the food we consume.

That simply means that similar to how carbohydrates are broken down into glucose via digestion, and protein to amino acids, fats are broken down to fatty acids via digestion as well.

These fatty acid molecules are normally joined together in groups of 3 to form what is known as triglycerides which act as energy storage.

This is the same fat that is formed when you eat more than your daily calorie requirements and excess calories are converted to fats to be used for energy at another time.

Without getting into the chemistry of it, Fatty Acids are divided into three groups:

  • Long-Chain Fatty Acids (LCFA) – has 13 to 28 carbon atoms
  • Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA) –  has 6 to 12 carbon atoms
  • Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFA) – has 5 or fewer carbon atoms

When these fatty acids are metabolized (broken down via metabolism), they provide a rich source of energy in the form of Adenosine triphosphate also known as ATP. This is energy that you use for daily activities such as thinking, moving, etc.

However, LCFA is metabolized differently from the MCFA and SCFA.

Because of the shorter chain length (fewer carbon atoms), medium-chain fatty acids are metabolized much faster than long-chain ones.  This means that they are utilized right away as a source of energy for the body rather than being stored as fat .

… And as I mentioned before, coconut oil is predominantly medium-chain fatty acids while MOST other fats are made up of long-chain fatty acids.

Verdict: If your objective is to lose weight, try replacing some of the oils that you currently use with organic coconut oil since it has a greater impact on boosting your metabolism and thus pushing you one step closer to your weight loss goal.

2. Coconut Oil Is Also Thermogenic.

Thermogenic Fat Loss

‘Therm’ refers to heat energy. So as the name suggests, Thermogenic refers to the production of heat.

Whenever you eat food, it has to be broken down by various metabolic pathways before it is finally assimilated by the body. All of these processes require energy.

However, some foods require more energy than others to be digested and metabolized.

In layman’s terms, that means that whenever you consume thermogenic foods such as coconut oil, for example, it requires a lot of energy (heat energy) to be broken down when compared to other foods/fats.

Here’s why this is important when you take coconut oil for weight loss:

Verdict: By simply replacing other fats in your diet with coconut oil, you’ll burn more calories per gram of fat without doing anything else. The difference may not be noticeable in a day are two but over time those extra calories will add up and fast track your weight loss results.

3. Coconut Oil Will Suppress Your Appetite

coconut oil suppresses appetite

One of the main causes of weight gain is overeating. And as I preach a lot on this blog, if you eat more than your daily calorie requirements the excess food WILL always be stored as fat. That’s just how our bodies work.

Truthfully, when it comes to food some people just can’t control themselves.

In fact it goes beyond that too. Some foods are very calorie dense which makes it super easy to go over your daily calorie budget without knowing – that is, if you even have an idea of how many calories you should be consuming daily in the first place.

  • But what if you didn’t have to feel hungry all the time?
  • What if you could curb your appetite so that you don’t overeat?

That would be amazing wouldn’t it?

Well, by taking coconut oil for weight loss, will help to suppress your appetite and keep hunger pangs at bay.

Studies on medium-chain fatty acids show that when compared to other fats, they give a feeling of fullness which as you’d imagine would make you eat less than you are accustom to.

This will help you in your quest to create a calorie deficit that is necessary for weight loss.

Verdict: In order to burn fat, you need to create a calorie deficit. By taking coconut oil for weight loss, it will help to keep hunger pangs at bay making it a whole lot easier to create that deficit required to shed the excess pounds over time.

4. Coconut Oil Attacks Stubborn Belly Fat

Ask most women that are trying to lose weight where they’d want to lose it from the most and they’ll tell you: ‘I want to get rid of stubborn belly fat.

This is a huge problem area for a lot of persons, men and women alike.

Fortunately, coconut oil can help to combat this problem of stubborn belly fat.

In a randomized, double-blind, clinical trial involving 40 women aged 20–40 years. Half the group was instructed to consume 30 mL of either soybean oil and the other half to consume 30 mL coconut oil over a 12-week period while following a controlled diet.

They were also instructed to walk at least 50 minutes per day.

After the results were in, the following were evident:

  • Both groups lost approximately the same amount of weight
  • However, the group with coconut oil was found to  have a reduction in waist circumference  (WC) while the soybean oil group had an increase.

You can read the study here.

Verdict: while more study is needed, it is evident from the research that the use of coconut oil promotes a reduction in belly fat. This is indicated by the reduction of waist circumference from the research study. So if you are looking to shrink your waist size, I’d definitely recommend you start using coconut oil for weight loss in your diet.

5. Coconut Oil Also Improves Your Hormone Health

Everything in your body is regulated by hormones. These hormones are basically biochemical messengers that are chemical substances produced by the endocrine glands.

Hormones are secreted directly into the bloodstream to help regulate metabolic activity and things such as your mood, thyroid function, digestion, sex drive, and more.

So how does coconut oil fit in?

Well fats are the building blocks for hormone production. Coconut oil has a medium-chain fatty acid called lauric acid which has been proven to increase good HDL cholesterol in the blood to help improve cholesterol ratio levels.

Coconut oil also decreases bad cholesterol in the blood by converting it to sterone pregnenolone. Pregnenolone is a molecule that is the foundation of the production of most of the hormones that our bodies need.

Verdict: By utilizing coconut oil for weight loss you are also able to keep your hormones in check, lower bad cholesterol and improve your good HDL cholesterol while promoting an overall healthier lifestyle.

6. Coconut Oil Increases Your Energy Levels

Improves Energy Levels

Feeling tired and exhausted regularly?

Your energy levels may need a little boost to get you firing.

Low energy levels equates to less moving around which means less calories burnt on a daily basis. However, studies have shown that by taking coconut oil in the mornings, your energy levels can be boosted over 5% for up to 24 hour period.

This is because medium-chain fatty acids are not stored as fat in the body. Instead, they are transported to the liver where they are converted to energy for use right away.

Verdict: Taking coconut oil for weight loss in the morning can boost your energy levels throughout the entire day. This means more moving around, less grouchiness, and more importantly, more calories burnt to take you one step closer to your weight loss goal.

Other Ways To Use Coconut Oil

Butter Replacement While Baking

Do you love to bake pastries like cookies, cup cakes and muffins? I know I do!

But did you know that you can replace the butter you use to do all your baking with coconut oil? Yes, you can. It may need some getting use to so you can start half butter half coconut oil until you are ready to try it 100%.

Plus the coconut favoring is a BONUS. Makes your pastries delicious if you are a coconut fan like I am.

Use Coconut Oil As Your Salad Dressing

Again depending on where you live, your coconut oil maybe solid at room temperature. So you may want to melt it down to liquid form by placing the jar in some hot water.

Instead of using your regular salad dressing that more than likely doesn’t provide much nutritional value, try adding a teaspoon or two of coconut oil on your salad to reap both the health and weight loss benefits.

Use Coconut Oil As Nut Butter

Love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? You may love coconut butter sandwiches too!

Here’s how to prepare your coconut butter mix: simply add your favorite nuts (peanut, cashew, almonds, etc) to a food processor. I like to use unsalted mixed nuts. Add two to three tablespoon of your coconut oil to the nuts and grind until it is creamy or if you like crunchy butter that works too.

Spread your coconut butter on a toast and enjoy!

Use Coconut Oil In Your Everyday Cooking

Instead of using vegetable oils or olive oils, use coconut oil instead. You can use it to sauté vegetables, roast vegetables, fried rice, or whatever you’d normally use cooking oil to do.

Not only will you be enjoying the coconut flavor that is added to your meals but you can feel great knowing that you are making a healthy choice to replace the other fats in your diet that maybe sabotaging your weight loss goals.

How To Make Sure That Using Coconut Oil For Fits With Your Daily Calorie Requirements

As I mentioned earlier, if you consume more than our daily calorie requirements  (eat in a surplus) , your body will automatically convert the excess calories to fat and store it for energy to use at a later time. And if you continually eat in a surplus, then you’ll continue to gain weight.

With that being said, if you want to have an amazing coconut oil weight loss result then you need to ensure that the amount you take fits inside your daily calorie requirement.

Here’s how to do that:

  • Firstly, determine your daily calorie requirements
  • Secondly, determine how much coconut oil is required for your age range (see table above)
  • Adjust the amount of coconut oil needed to fit within 10-15% of your daily calories

Using an example…

Let’s say your daily calorie requirement is 2000 calories and you weigh 150 pounds. Based on your age, the suggested amount of coconut oil per day is 4.5 tablespoons.

CAUTION: There are 117 calories in 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. That means the total calories from coconut oil alone will be (117 x 4.5) = 527 calories. This is already more than 25% of your daily calories which means you’ll only have 1463 calories to be had from food.

That is NOT ideal!

My suggestion is to adjust the suggested amount of coconut oil for weight loss based on your age to fit within 10-15% of your daily calorie requirements. Using the example above, 10% – 15% of 2000 will be 200 – 300 calories. That’s roughly about 2 tablespoon on the low end and 3 tablespoon on the high end.

Also keep in mind that coconut oil for weight loss is FAT. Depending on your diet, you’ll have to make adjustments to ensure that you get proper amounts of carbohydrates and proteins as well.

Final Thoughts

Let’s be honest, losing weight is not an easy feat. It takes times, effort and discipline. That means everything counts.

So why not take advantage of every opportunity you have to make life easier on yourself?

Using coconut oil for weight loss will definitely take you one step closer to your goal. Think about it, you are already using other forms of fat in your diet. So why not make the switch to a healthier and more beneficial alternative?

Just remember that at the end of the day, coconut oil is fat so be sure to follow my instructions above to ensure that the amount you take per day is in line with your calorie goals.
